FAQ

Is it safe next to Homebrew?

Yes. nextbrew uses its own prefix (/opt/nextbrew on macOS, /home/nextbrew/.nextbrew on Linux) and never shares one with Homebrew (/opt/homebrew or /usr/local). Only PATH order decides which program runs when both provide a command.

Does it need Ruby?

No. nextbrew does not run Ruby itself. Packages it installs may contain Ruby.

Does it support third-party taps?

nb tap and nb trust are implemented. See nb tap / trust.

Why /opt/nextbrew and /home/nextbrew/.nextbrew?

They keep nextbrew apart from Homebrew’s prefixes. Bottles hard-code their prefix path, so the location must be no longer than Homebrew’s: /opt/nextbrew on macOS, and on Linux /home/nextbrew/.nextbrew, which is no longer than /home/linuxbrew/.linuxbrew.

How do I uninstall nextbrew?

nb reset deletes everything inside the root and prefix directories (it asks first; -y skips the prompt), then re-creates the empty directories, so they stay behind. Remove them too, then delete the nb and nbx binaries (the installer puts them in ~/.local/bin unless NEXTBREW_BIN says otherwise) and the lines nb init added to your shell config.

nb reset sudo rm -rf /opt/nextbrew # macOS sudo rm -rf /home/nextbrew/.nextbrew # Linux rm ~/.local/bin/nb ~/.local/bin/nbx
